A local court in the city of Manila set the promulgation of judgment on the cyberlibel case filed against Rappler CEO Maria Ressa and former researcher Reynaldo Santos, Jr. on June 15.
The promulgation, that was originally scheduled by the Manila Regional Trial Court Branch 46 on April 3, was postponed due to the community quarantine amid the threat of the coronavirus disease 2019 .
With courts resuming operation as community quarantine guidelines are relaxed, the verdict on Ressa and Santos’ case can now be handed down. “Please be reminded that only counsels and parties to the case will be allowed inside the courtroom. This is in line with the safety protocols of the Court, in view of the CoVid situation,” the notice from the court read.
The case stemmed from a complaint filed by businessman Wilfredo Keng regarding an article titled “CJ Using SUVs of Controversial Businessman.” This was written by Santos on May 29, 2012. In the article, Santos wrote that Chief Justice Renato Corona was using a 2011 Chevrolet Suburban that was found to be registered to Keng. Santos described Keng as “shady” and claimed that he was involved in human trafficking and drug smuggling.
