Warning: Contains spoilers for Project Hail Mary!Amazon MGM's sci-fi movie, Project Hail Mary, gives viewers a final surprise in the credits. After following Ryland Grace and Rocky's epic journey through space to save their respective suns from dying and killing their planets, viewers are last treated to the two cosmic buddies enjoying life together on Erid, Rocky's homeworld.

Project Hail Mary's ending leaves their story there, with Rocky returning home to be with his companion, Adrian, and Grace starting his day teaching Eridian children about the speed of light. The conclusion lines up with Andy Weir's 2022 book of the same name that the movie adapts. And with Weir yet to write a Project Hail Mary sequel book, it was widely expected that the film would not have a post-credits scene teasing one. That is true, as there is no mid-credits or after-credits scene teasing more adventures for Grace and Rocky. But Project Hail Mary's credits do include a special surprise for anyone who sticks around. Project Hail Mary's Post-Credits Moment Explained The moment comes at the very end of the credits, once all the names of the cast and crew, songs from the soundtrack, and studio logos have finished rolling by. The last thing viewers are left with is a quick audio sampling from Rocky, as his singing-like way of communication is heard one last time. At the time of this writing, it is unknown what Rocky is saying in the credits audio. An official translation has not been made, and we do not get text on screen translating the song like Grace does throughout most of the movie. Until a true translation comes, Project Hail Mary lets everyone interpret Rocky's final message for themselves. The most common assumption is that Rocky is saying "Goodbye." But there is a problem with that belief. Rocky states in the movie that Eridians don't say goodbye or even really have a word for it, with them instead using a gesture of rubbing one forearm across the other. Perhaps this song is Rocky's way of saying "The End," making the credits surprise a chance for him to say this is where the story ends, or "Thank You," after audiences have watched the whole movie. It could even be a joke for all we know, one where Rocky mocks anyone who stuck around hoping for a traditional post-credits scene. Why It Makes Sense Project Hail Mary Doesn't Have A Credits Scene Including Rocky's little song was the best-case scenario for Project Hail Mary having a credits surprise, as the movie was never going to have a regular scene. Rocky and Grace's journey reaches its natural conclusion by the time Project Hail Mary ends. Everything is wrapped up, even life on Earth, so there are no loose threads worth tying up in a tag scene. Anything beyond Rocky's song would have likely felt tacked on and unnecessary. There's also the issue of a sequel being far from guaranteed. The movie will need to do incredibly well at the box office and likely get a story from Weir to even entertain the thought of making a sequel. Including a real after-credits scene was too big a risk when we have no real evidence that one is coming. Ultimately, Project Hail Mary isn't the type of movie that needs a post-credits scene. There are no baked-in franchise aspirations here. And even if there were, not every franchise does or should use credits scenes to set up future installments. Having a fun bonus surprise like Rocky's message is all anyone could have hoped for. And its the type of surprise that won't leave viewers who didn't stick around for it feeling like they really missed out on some major reveal or sequence. It's just meant to be fun and light-hearted; one last song from your new favorite alien. 10/10 9/10 Project Hail Mary 10 stars 9 stars 8 stars 7 stars 6 stars 5 stars 4 stars 3 stars 2 stars 1 star Like Follow Followed PG-13 Science Fiction Adventure Drama Release Date March 20, 2026 Runtime 156 Minutes Director Christopher Miller, Phil Lord Writers Drew Goddard, Andy Weir Producers Ryan Gosling, Amy Pascal, Andy Weir, Aditya Sood, Christopher Miller, Phil Lord, Rachel O'Connor Cast See All
