The program provides free box fans to seniors age 55 and older and those with disabilities.

Project Cool , an annual program that donates new box fans to senior citizens, is underway. Seniors age 55 years and older who are in need of a free fan may visit the Guadalupe Community Center , 1801 W César E Chávez Blvd., or call the United Way Helpline at 211 for a convenient location. Project Cool , now in its 28th year, kicked off June 7 and continues through the summer.

Dangerous heat is becoming increasingly common in South Texas. Use this free tool to track it. The program reduces costs for seniors on a fixed income but also enables them to remain independent and to maintain quality of life, Project Cool organizers said. The average fan costs $27, which many seniors may not be able to afford. Project Cool also is open to disabled individuals.

Tropical Storm Alberto has formed in the Gulf of Mexico. Here’s its path. “The extreme heat continues to be a major barrier to health and safety for residents,” he said in a news release. “Project Cool doesn’t just provide residents relief from the heat but also peace of mind that they will have a safe space in their home when they need it.” Those who want to help may drop off new box fans at any San Antonio Fire Station or at the Guadalupe Community Center.
