Letter seeks a bar for former President Trump and state Sen. Doug Mastriano, and an investigation of U.S. Rep Scott Perry.
A national progressive group’s effort to get state elections officials to use their powers to bar “insurrectionists” from future elections ballots reached Pennsylvania Wednesday.delivered a letter asking Acting Secretary of State Leigh Chapman to strike former President Donald J. Trump and gubernatorial candidate Doug Mastriano from future ballots in Pennsylvania because of their roles in the Jan. 6 efforts to stop the certification of 2020 presidential election.
The group - an outgrowth of U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaigns - also asked Chapman to investigate whether U.S. Rep. Scott Perry should face the same sanction.Ginsberg said the group is hinging its argument on Section 3 of the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which bars officials from holding federal or state office if they “have engaged in insurrection or rebellion... or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof.
Trump continually raised claims in late 2020 that presidential vote counts in several swing states, including Pennsylvania, were rigged against him and he pressured state and federal officials to take actions that he hoped could keep him in office. He also was the headline speaker at the Stop the Steal rally in Washington on Jan. 6 that preceded the mob attack at the U.S. Capitol.
