The Montgomery County Sherriff’s Office has reshaped the way they offer healthcare to inmates and their families through the Affordable Care Act.

) - The Montgomery County Sherriff’s Office has reshaped the way they offer healthcare to inmates and their families through the Affordable Care Act . The partnership between the sheriff’s office and Trinity Corrections Care facilitates an easier way for eligible inmates to enroll.

“Most all people that are incarcerated don’t have healthcare and so this was addressing a group that really needed it but didn’t have access to it,” explained Chief Deputy Kevin Murphy. Typically to enroll in the Affordable Care Act, you must do so during an open enrollment period that only lasts a few months. Time in jail serves as a “qualifying life event” that grants a special enrollment period, so eligible inmates can enroll at any time. The program started a few months ago, and according to Murphy, it’s already producing promising results. “Trinity Correctional came in and actually said they had one of the highest percentage rates of sign-ups in our facility at like 80 to 85 percent,” Murphy said. For the sheriff’s office, the program just makes sense. It insures inmates even after they are released at no cost to the local taxpayer. “Healthcare in the detention facility was a cash business, and the taxpayers were paying for it. Now that the inmates - the majority that is - have ACA, it cuts a lot of those costs,” Murphy explained. Eligible inmates include those pre-conviction, on probation or parole, or under limited supervision post-conviction. Benefits include emergency services, prescriptions, mental health and substance abuse services, and special treatments like dialysis.Check your insurance policy for flooding coverage
