A pro-Palestinian demonstrator was beaten at an Auburn University protest Sunday.
“Where’s my shotgun?” one counterprotester apparently yelled at Stephen McGentry, 27, an Opelika man who had helped write pro-Palestinian slogans at Toomer’s Corner. McGentry, left bloodied after the incident, declined to press charges,
Someone followed McGentry to Toomer’s Drugs, and shortly before 6:30 p.m., after one counterprotester shoved him, the two began punching each other. McGentry was pushed to the ground, choked, and punched several more times. An Auburn spokeswoman, Jennifer Adams, told AL.com in a statement that the school “prohibits calls for violence targeting anyone, including any ethnic, minority or religious group.
According to the university housing’s community standards, “vandalism, malicious or negligent destruction, tampering with, or damage to the residence hall, university property or the property of others is prohibited.” Copeland said it’s too early to tell if there are increased tensions on campus as a result of the incident. However, there has been an increased security presence on Toomer’s Corner.
