Pro-Palestinian demonstrators moved in before dawn on Tuesday to set up an encampment on Old Main Lawn at Western Washington University.

About 60 people are camping on the Old Main Law at Western Washington University to support the people in Gaza and to call on school officials to acknowledge the harm occuring to Arab, Arab-American and Muslim students on campus. Pro-Palestinian demonstrators moved in before dawn on Tuesday to set up an encampment on Old Main Lawn at Western Washington University .

Sonja Lerner, a senior at WWU and one of the organizers, said what is occurring in Gaza is genocide, and she and other demonstrators want the university to meet a list of demands. As far as the demands being made by encampment organizers, WWU administrators are trying to listen to concerns and will consider undertaking appropriate solutions so long as they do not adversely impact the wider community or the university’s academic mission, according to a post on the school’s website.

WWU has formed a response team that is working to have an open dialogue with the student protesters while also keeping disruptions on campus to a minimum. The president said he has been meeting with student leaders from the WWU Arab Student Association, the WWU chapter of Jewish Voice for Peace, as well as Hillel of WWU, to talk about their concerns.Lerner said the school’s efforts at dialogue over the concerns in Gaza have not been genuine, and no progress has been made.
