University officials are treating it as a crime scene but no arrests have been made.
A group of pro-Palestinian protesters take over UC Berkeley’s condemned Anna Head Alumnae Hall on Haste Street near Bowditch Street in Berkeley, Calif., on Wednesday, May 15, 2024. BERKELEY — The landscape of pro-Palestinian protests on university campuses in the Bay Area has shifted again, with demonstrators occupying buildings on two East Bay campuses within 24 hours, just days after encampments began winding down.
The latter said they are treating the site as an active “crime scene” and consider the protesters, who broke in on Wednesday, as suspects. But as of Thursday afternoon, no arrests had been made, and university spokesperson Dan Mogulof would not discuss Cal’s response plans. They also called on the college to not remove a vigil dedicated to Palestinian children killed in Gaza since Oct. 7.
Hutchins said there was no plan to clear the chapel, and that the school will continue with planned services and events. She said she expected the chapel to be vacated later Thursday after the protesting students and administrators are able to meet. The UC Berkeley Divest Instagram account reshared a post from the UC Berkeley Graduate Students for Justice In Palestine stating their solidarity with the protesters at the hall and condemning the university — and Mogulof directly — for attempting to “fragment and divide our movement for Palestine.”
