"We don’t believe that this campaign is conducive to academic debate," said Alizay Azeem, a Rice senior organizing with Rice Students for Justice in Palestine."This conference does not have an equal power dynamic and ... to pretend otherwise is just, I think, a way to excuse and normalize this violence."Baker officials have made no indication of canceling the “Israel @ 75” conference, only saying it aligns with their goals of hosting dialogue between world leaders.

Diplomats, policymakers and academic experts will attend the daylong conference Thursday. In addition to a panel on the U.S.-Israel relationship, the Rice-based public policy think tank will host a discussion called, “Two States for Two People? Are There Still Viable Solutions for Israel and Palestine?”

The conflict traces back to at least 1947, when the United Nations passed a resolution to partition Palestine into Arab and Jewish states, with Jerusalem set aside as a separately governed entity. Using it as a legal precedent for statehood, the Jewish People’s Council one year later proclaimed the new state of Israel, and the United States recognized the country the same day.Palestinians in what was now Israel opposed the plan, and violence erupted.
