Archbishop Riordan currently has no active cases on campus, according to officials, and risk to public low
Archbishop Riordan High School is expected to fully resume in-person classes Monday after a tuberculosis outbreak forced some students and faculty to learn and work remotely over the last few weeks. The San Francisco Department of Public Health announced Friday that 100% of faculty and on-campus staff and 99% of students had been tested for and cleared of having active tuberculosis, allowing the resumption of in-person learning Monday.
Public health officials said Friday that the risk to the general public is low, with the school’s three cases the only ones reported to the department from any of The City’s educational institutions. A medical provider evaluated Archbishop Riordan’s first case in September, according to a timeline provided by the Department of Public Health on Friday. Public health officials first received notice of the case in November, announcing it that same month. The City identified two subsequent active cases last month. None of those cases are currently contagious, according to officials, and the risk to the public low. “The health and well-being of the entire school community, and all residents of San Francisco, continues to be our top priority,” Dr. Susan Philip, The City’s health officer, said in a statement Friday. “We are committed to working closely with the school until this outbreak is resolved.” “We are grateful for the patience and understanding of our community as we navigate this situation and remain focused on steady progress moving forward,” Archbishop Riordan President Tim Reardon told The Examiner in a provided statement. Symptoms include coughing, fever, and fatigue. With around 1,150 students, Archbishop Riordan is one of The City’s largest high schools of any kind. The school first canceled classes Jan. 30, beginning to test students as they completed assignments from home. A hybrid class schedule began Feb. 9, with students who tested negative able to go to school. Hundreds of Archbishop Riordan students and staff tested positive for tuberculosis, but 204 of the 219 cases were confirmed to be latent. Such cases are not contagious, but it can develop into active tuberculosis without treatment or detection, according to public health officials. Reardon emphasized that these people did not exhibit symptoms. “That distinction has been important for our community as people work to better understand the situation,” he said in a statement to The Examiner. “Those details relieve some of the anxiety people feel when they see the testing data.” The remaining 15 positive cases are in the process of receiving chest x-rays to rule out active tuberculosis. Reardon and Dr. Susannah Graves, the director of the public health department’s tuberculosis branch, said in a statement that “there are currently no contagious cases on campus.” Reardon and Graves said the school and public health department will conduct additional tests this spring to prevent further transmission, although no precise timeline was given.
