Discouraged that there were no media outlets written by and for teens to engage in news and current events, Lily Wolfson co-founded a local New York City newspaper that immediately attracted teens from around the world. After two issues, The Iris became a global outlet and phenomenon.

While Gen Zers use their voices on social media to advocate for critical social issues like climate change, the Black Lives Matter movement and female reproductive rights, there is a disconnect between younger people and mainstream media. This void sparked an idea for 18-year-old Lily Wolfson after realizing a news outlet for teens to write about current affairs and politics didn’t exist.

Initially, Lily set out to publish a youth-led newspaper for New York City students. During the pandemic, she spoke with her peer Ryan Pelosky about what they could do to create an opportunity that encouraged teens to contribute and consume news. Combining their writing experience and dedication to informed and accurate news reporting, they conceived and launchedLily’s interest in newswriting began at a young age.

After publishing two issues and promoting them on the newspaper’s social media platforms, they were inundated with messages from students across the globe. “This helped us realize our goal of writing international stories and representing our generation as holistically as possible. Recruiting students from across the country and around the world to share their stories, interests, and opinions with other teenagers has been, and will continue to be our mission.

Lily and Ryan partnered with schools in London, the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, and the Syrian Youth Empowerment initiative to recruit writers. Today, diverse team is comprised of 180 staff members living across the U.S. and in 16 countries including Jamaica, Iraq, England and Syria.
