Prince William’s commitment to the Centrepoint homeless charity runs deep

’s commitment to the Centrepoint homeless charity runs deep—in the past he has slept on the streets of London and sung along to “Living on a Prayer” withat Kensington Palace to support the cause. And today William is heading to southeast London to open a new center for the charity, which he joined as a patron in 2005 and which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.

On Wednesday morning he was in south east London to formally open Apprenticeship House, which aims to support young people in their journey to independent living. Part of a nationwide housing program, the charity has transformed an existing building in South London into a seven-bed shared home for young people on its apprenticeship programs.

While royals tend to continue patronages for no more than ten years, William has been loyal to Centrepoint for nearly 15 years, a time in which he has forged close connections with the organisation and the young people it helps. In December 2009, just days before Christmas, William slept on the streets to raise awareness for the charity and the thousands of young homeless people in Britain.

The charity provides homeless young people with accommodation, health support and life skills to get them back into education, training and employment. Since starting out in the basement of St Anne's Church in 1969, the organisation has grown to become the UK's leading youth homelessness charity, supporting over 9,000 homeless young people a year.
