Prince Harry has reached a settlement in his lawsuit against News Group Newspapers (NGN), the publisher of The Sun. The settlement includes a full apology and admission of wrongdoing from NGN, who admitted to unlawfully intruding into Harry's private life and employing illegal tactics to gather information. The court awarded Harry substantial damages.

Prince Harry has settled his lawsuit against News Group News papers (NGN), the media company owned by Rupert Murdoch that publishes The Sun and previously published the now-defunct News of the World. The settlement, announced on Wednesday, included a 'full and unequivocal' apology and admission of wrongdoing from NGN.

In an apology statement, the media company acknowledged that it made a 'serious intrusion' into Harry's private life between 1996 and 2011, 'including incidents of unlawful activities carried out by private investigators working for The Sun.' NGN also stated that it would pay a 'substantial' amount of damages to Harry. Harry, who was joined in the lawsuit by U.K. lawmaker Tom Watson, welcomed the 'monumental victory' settlement agreement. Their lawyer, barrister David Sherborne, described it as a 'historic admission of unlawfulness at The Sun' during a press conference at the Royal Courts of Justice, Britain's High Court, in London. 'Today the lies are laid bare,' Sherborne proclaimed. 'Today, the cover-ups are exposed. And today proves that no one stands above the law. The time for accountability has arrived.'In his lawsuit, Harry alleged that journalists at The Sun illegally gathered information about him and hired private detectives to do so. He further claimed that senior executives at The Sun were aware of the alleged illegal information gathering and covered it up. The apology from NGN also addressed 'phone hacking, surveillance and misuse of private information by journalists and private investigators instructed by them at the News of the World.' The media company expressed additional remorse for the extensive coverage and serious intrusion into Harry's private life and, particularly, the private life of his late mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, during his younger years. Harry's settlement with NGN was announced just one day after the trial began in London's High Court. On Tuesday, Harry's lawyer requested an hours adjournment, which was followed by additional requests for delays from both Harry's and NGN's legal teams. NGN's lawyer, Anthony Hudson KC, stated that there had been 'intense negotiations' between the two legal teams for the past few days, characterizing their agreement as 'very few and far between' in the course of the litigation.
