A Star Wars fan-fic heads to Prime Video.
Alongside two brand-new photos, the release date has just been announced for The Love Hypothesis, an upcoming Prime Video film based on a Star Wars fan-fiction about Rey and Kylo Ren.
The Love Hypothesis, starring Lili Reinhart and Tom Bateman, will be released on September 23. The news was revealed in a video shared by Prime Video on X that shows Reinhart as her character, Olive Smith, picking up a coffee order, with the cup revealing the date:"9.23.
" The streamer added a caption saying,"Just a little something brewing. " Along with a caption that said,"Warning: Explosive chemistry ahead," Prime Video also shared two new images from the film. The first shows Olive and Dr. Adam Carlsen kissing, and the characters sitting outside on a bench looking into each other's eyes in the second image.
Check out the photos below: The Love Hypothesis began as a Star Wars fan-fiction written by Ali Hazelwood under the title Head Over Feet. The plot revolves around a romance between Rey and Kylo Ren, who are not a couple in the Star Wars universe, but a lot of fan-fiction leans into alternate stories not seen in the original property, including romantic relationships between characters who are enemies in the official canon.
The characters of Rey and Kylo Ren, played by Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver, respectively, made their debut in the Star Wars franchise via the sequel trilogy, consisting of The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker, which collectively grossed $4.47 billion at the box office. Rey and Kylo begin as enemies, with the two battling each other in The Force Awakens.
They form a mind connection in The Last Jedi, with Rey adamantly refusing to join the dark side. The final installment in the sequel trilogy sees the two characters kissing, and Kylo Ren dying while saving Rey's life. After writing the Star Wars fan-fiction Head Over Feet with Rey and Kylo Ren, Hazelwood eventually reworked the story to remove all allusions to Star Wars, which became the bestselling novel The Love Hypothesis when it was released in 2021.
Now Prime Video is three months away from premiering the film adaptation of The Love Hypothesis, which stars Reinhart as a college student named Olive Smith and Bateman as a professor named Dr. Adam Carlsen. The two pretend to date each other, as part of Olive's plan to get her friend group to believe she's in love. Reinhart and Bateman's co-stars include Rachel Marsh, Jaboukie Young-White, Nicholas Duvernay and Arty Froushan.
Claire Scanlon directed The Love Hypothesis, Sarah Rothschild wrote the script, and Elizabeth Cantillon served as a producer. Before joining the cast of The Love Hypothesis, Reinhart was best known for playing Betty Cooper on Riverdale. Her other film and TV credits include Hustlers, Surviving Jack and Hal & Harper.
Bateman, meanwhile, has appeared on the big screen in movies like Snatched, Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile, and on the small screen in Da Vinci's Demons and Based on a True Story. Interestingly, Bateman already had a connection to Star Wars before The Love Hypothesis; he is married to Ridley, the actress who played Rey in the Star Wars franchise. The Love Hypothesis will be released on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, on Prime Video.
