Matthew Lillard in Bosch

While the Bosch franchise seemingly ended years ago, Bosch: Start of Watch and Ballard prove that Prime Video’s most beloved police procedural isn’t going anywhere any time soon. In the era of streaming, it is getting increasingly hard to keep a good franchise down.

Even as Netflix searches for its Stranger Things replacement, the show still isn’t over. The original series may have released its series finale in late 2025, but Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 will soon fill in the blanks between seasons 2 and 3 with an animated interquel story. In much the same way, although Prime Video’s beloved crime show Bosch technically ended in 2021, the franchise is still going strong in 2026. Bosch: Start of Watch and Ballard Season 2 Prove Bosch Isn’t Over Yet Based on the Michael Connelly novel series of the same name, Bosch follows Titus Welliver’s boarding antihero Hieronymous “Harry” Bosch as he solves homicide cases in the Hollywood Hills as part of the LAPD. A troubled but good-hearted protagonist, Bosch bends the rules to catch villains but always sticks to his own rigorous moral code. In this regard, Bosch is a lot like Jo Nesbo’s Harry Hole, a detective inspired by Connelly’s creation who will soon receive a Netflix show of his own. Bosch enjoyed critical acclaim throughout the show’s seven seasons, which were released on Prime Video between 2014 and 2021. However, the spinoff Bosch: Legacy effectively acted as a straightforward continuation of the show. While technically a spinoff, the three-season series Bosch: Legacy was, in reality, a sequel that gave viewers another three seasons of the title character’s adventures. By the time Bosch: Legacy was getting ready to wrap up, the show spawned a spinoff titled Ballard, wherein Maggie Q played the titular detective specializing in cold cases. Bosch Is Prime Video’s Most Consistently Popular Police Procedural Franchise While Netflix’s Connelly adaptation, The Lincoln Lawyer, is also a big hit, that newer show has not yet had the same luck with spinoffs as Bosch. After Bosch: Legacy’s three-season run and Ballard’s first season, Ballard was renewed for a second season just in time for the creators to announce Bosch: Start of Watch. This prequel series will follow a young Bosch as he learns his trade, taking place long before the story of the original series began. Thus, the franchise now has two spinoffs on the way in 2026, Ballard season 2 and Bosch: Start of Watch, despite the original show ostensibly ending five years ago with Bosch’s series finale in 2021. 182 9.7/10 Bosch 10 stars 9 stars 8 stars 7 stars 6 stars 5 stars 4 stars 3 stars 2 stars 1 star Like Follow Followed TV-MA Mystery Drama Crime Release Date 2015 - 2021-00-00 Network Prime Video Showrunner Eric Ellis Overmyer Directors Alex Zakrzewski, Ernest R.
