The true crime series will return with three new episodes focusing on the motive behind the 2022 University of Idaho student murders, featuring previously restricted testimony, body cam footage, and forensic evidence.
The true crime documentary series One Night in Idaho: The College Murders is returning for a second season on Prime Video. Created by Katie A. King, the series first premiered last year and offered a detailed examination of the investigation into the horrific 2022 murders of four University of Idaho students: Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Ethan Chapin, and Xana Kernodle.
The perpetrator, Bryan Kohberger, was arrested and ultimately pleaded guilty to all charges just before his scheduled trial in August 2025. The initial four-part season received widespread critical acclaim for its sensitive and thorough recounting of the case and its impact on the Moscow, Idaho community. Now, according to a recent report from Variety, Prime Video has officially greenlit a follow-up season.
This new installment will shift focus from the basic facts of the crime to the more profound and lingering question that has haunted the public: why did Kohberger commit these brutal acts? The second season is slated to consist of three episodes and will unveil significant new material that was previously restricted due to a court-imposed gag order during the active investigation and pre-trial proceedings.
Viewers can expect to hear fresh testimony from police officers who were previously silenced, providing new perspectives on the investigation's challenges and breakthroughs. The season will also include never-before-seen body camera footage, additional police interviews, and previously undisclosed forensic evidence that may shed further light on the motive and method. Key returning figures include Detectives Brett Payne and Darren Gilbertson, who will offer their emotional, firsthand accounts of the case, alongside Police Chief James Fry.
Furthermore, the new season will feature expanded interviews with many of the individuals who shared their stories in the first season, including friends and family of the victims, allowing for a deeper exploration of the long-term aftermath and the community's ongoing journey toward healing. The production is expected to maintain the high journalistic standards and narrative depth of its predecessor, with acclaimed director Liz Garbus at the helm.
While a specific release date has not been announced, industry speculation points to a 2025 premiere, aligning with the original timeline surrounding the conclusion of the legal case. This continuation promises to provide a more introspective look at one of the most shocking criminal cases in recent memory, moving beyond the procedural details to confront the complex psychological and social questions that remain.
The series remains a powerful testament to the victims' lives and a resource for understanding the intricate workings of a major homicide investigation. With new evidence and testimonies coming to light, One Night in Idaho: The College Murders season 2 aims to deliver a comprehensive and thought-provoking conclusion to a tragic story that captured national attention.
The decision to produce a second season underscores the public's enduring fascination with true crime narratives that are handled with dignity and rigor, and the producers' commitment to exploring every facet of the case with respect for the victims and their loved ones
