Prime Video is partnering with Battlestar Galactica creator Ronald D. Moore to adapt the acclaimed video game God of War into a television series. The show aims to capture the essence of beloved fantasy series like The Witcher and Vikings by blending rich mythologies with deep emotional storytelling, particularly focusing on Kratos's journey as a father. With the success of recent video game adaptations, this new series is poised to become a major fantasy hit.

For those yearning for the golden age of fantasy television, there is good news. Shows like The Witcher and Vikings were the crown jewels of lore-inspired fantasy, and now there is more to come.

Netflix's adaptation of Andrzej Sapkowski's fantasy series mastered the art of action and musical interludes under the stewardship of Henry Cavill and, later, Liam Hemsworth. Vikings also featured a seasoned warrior, though in a slightly more realistic setting. The History Channel series follows the historical Viking Ragnar Lothbrok, played by Dune: Prophecy star Travis Fimmel. Though these series never reached the heights of Game of Thrones, they were extremely specific, based on real mythology from their respective areas.

The sun may have set on these shows - even if one of them isn't technically over - but a new show is looking to be the perfect replacement. Prime Video is teaming up with Battlestar Galactica's own Ronald D. Moore for the adaptation of God of War. The 2018 video game marries all the fascinating mythology of Vikings and The Witcher, while delivering a heartfelt story about fatherhood.

Prime Video's God of War Harkens Back to the Best of Fantasy Television Close God of War is a perfect franchise that has been begging for an adaptation for a long time. The success of other video game adaptations such as The Last of Us and Fallout has finally given the series an opening. The story of the game follows the exiled god, Kratos, voiced by the iconic Christopher Judge.

Also known as the Ghost of Sparta, Kratos is a Greek god who arrives in the Norse dimension of Midgard after killing his family. He finds refuge with a new wife, Laufey, and son but never reveals his true origins to his child. The narrative is a fascinating blend of different cultures and mythologies. God of War mixes Norse and Greek mythology in an utterly unique way.

In the grand scheme of things, however, these are just trappings. The true measure of God of War lies in the internal conflict at the heart of the story. Just as Geralt of Rivia struggles with the responsibility of raising Ciri, Kratos also stumbles along the path of fatherhood. Adamant that his son Atreus never turns into the monster he was, Kratos distances himself only to realize that is not the right course of action.

The Ghost of Sparta is even more of an anti-hero than Geralt, a war machine who never learned how to be a good father. Through his travels with Atreus, he teaches the young boy the responsibilities of godhood, while their journey reminds Kratos that he has the potential to be a good father. This is the type of tension that makes for remarkable drama.

Viewers can also look forward to epic battles and the immersive world-building that Ronald D. Moore is known for. God of War may prove to be a return to the exciting set pieces and fantastical worlds that made Vikings and The Witcher such hits. Not a carbon copy of its spiritual predecessors, the upcoming Prime Video series should hit on all the hallmarks of what makes fantasy great.

If the game is any indication, this may be the next great win for the streamer. Further game sequels also hint that there is more to come if God of War strikes a chord
