Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s press conference came to an abrupt and prickly end when a reporter raised for a second time the health jailed Australian citizen Yang Hengjun and whether Australia had pushed for his release. “We certainly raised our issues in the Pacific as well as other issues including human rights, including Yang’s case, as well as the Australians who are on death row,” Albanese said on Monday after being asked about Yang’s case for the first time.
But Albanese said, “I’ve raised that” and ended the press conference. Yang’s supporters on Sunday implored Albanese to use his meeting with Li “to directly demand that Yang be released on medical parole or otherwise be transferred to safety in Australia, in accordance with basic humanitarian principles”.
