Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff and Republican Steve Garvey come out on top in March primary
The shape of California’s November Senate race is coming into focus after Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff and Republican candidate Steve Garvey came out on top of a crowded field of 27 candidates following Tuesday’s primary vote.
A little more than an hour after the polls closed, the Associated Press projected that the pair would be the winners in California’s top-two Senate primary. The results pave the way for a Schiff-Garvey matchup in the November general election that Schiff is heavily favored to win, given California’s strong Democratic leanings. In addition to the race for the full term, they will also be competing to finish the final few months of Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s term. Feinstein died in office last September after decades in the Senate. Shortly after 9 p.m., Tuesday, Schiff and Garvey had each garnered a little more than a third of the votes counted. That put them well ahead of their two most prominent rivals, Democratic Reps. Katie Porter of Irvine and Barbara Lee of Oakland. Pollsters predicted that a low voter turnout in Tuesday’s primary would mean an older, more conservative electorate, giving an edge to Garvey’s candidacy. Earlier, the race seemed like it was set to be a three-way matchup between the trio of Democratic power players. But that dynamic changed after Garvey — a former player for the Los Angeles Dodgers — launched his candidacy last October, leveraging his star power to consolidate California’s conservative voters behind him. Schiff’s campaign — which drew in by far the largest quantity of campaign donations — has invested heavily in TV ads and mailers targeting Garvey by labeling him “too conservative for California.” That strategy is widely seen as an attempt by Schiff to boost Garvey’s standing and prevent what would have been a much more challenging matchup against Porter. Schiff has also won important political allies, including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who threw her support behind him last year. That endorsement was followed by dozens of others from California’s Democratic caucus. Political analysts have noted that the three Democratic contenders have similar policy platforms and voting records. Schiff, however, has been vocal in his calls to end the filibuster as a means to ease the passage of key progressive priorities, such as gun control and voter protections. Garvey’s campaign has focused on California’s homelessness crisis and included visits to encampments in several large cities. Garvey supported Trump in his prior two presidential elections but has declined to say how he will vote in this year’s election.“For Southern California Republicans, the opportunity to show up and vote for your favorite Los Angeles Dodger might be an added incentive for them to show up at the polls,” said Marc Sandalow, senior faculty at the University of California Washington program and an Examiner columnist. “And that could be useful to Republicans in Congressional races.” Schiff’s victory could make an impact too. “There are few people nationally that annoy Republicans more than Adam Schiff,” he added.
