Prichard Police Chief Walter Knight on Thursday defended his department in the wake of a judge’s decision to dismiss a murder charge and fired back at allegations of dishonesty against the detective who investigated it.
Prichard Police Chief Walter Knight on Thursday defended his department in the wake of a judge’s decision to dismiss a murder charge.The chief’s comments come after Detective Jason Hadaway earlier this week failed to attend a preliminary hearing for Kendarius Welch, who wasKnight noted that the detective was present previous times the preliminary hearing was set, only for it be postponed.
Judges typically give both sides one opportunity to postpone a preliminary hearing. This would have been the second for the prosecution. The DA’s Office previously asked for a delay unrelated to Hadaway. “It’s very unacceptable that you have police not going to court,” he said. “But as a citizen, if you don’t show up to court, warrants are put on you. You’re probably gonna have the Sheriff’s Department come kicking in your door, moving furniture. Like – it’s just not right.”
