Senator goes further than prime minister Anthony Albanese's comments urging the Netanyahu government to 'operate by the rules of war' after Hamas attacked Israel on 7 October

Speaking in Australia's upper house, Labor senator Fatima Payman has said Israel's right to defend itself and its citizens cannot mean 'the destruction of Palestine' and 'the annihilation of Palestinian civilians'. Payman went further than prime minister Anthony Albanese in his remarks urging the Netanyahu government to 'operate by the rules of war' after Hamas attacked Israel on 7 October.

Payman said: 'The killing of innocent civilians in Israel should be condemned and we condemn it. The killing of innocent civilians in Palestine should also be condemned, and we must condemn it ... Israeli missiles strike residential dwellings, civilians, multi-story apartments, health facilities as well as places of worship, indiscriminately killing men, women and children.
