Preston Guild 2032: Councillors clash over how to secure the cash for the city's biggest cultural event
group voted down the motion in which the suggestions were made, telling councillors that plans for funding the next Guild were “in hand” and would be revealed in due course.
However, he praised the administration for having already created a £1m reserve for the 2032 staging. “It’s a sensible approach [and] it gives a clear message that we’re actually thinking about the Guild and dealing with [it] now - and not in 2032, or very close to it,” Cllr Whittam said.Deputy council leader - and cabinet member for resources - Martyn Rawlinson insisted that the authority was “on with it”.
The motion was defeated by 20 votes to 15, with two abstentions - one from Labour Garrison ward councillor Amber Afzal and the other, unusually, from a cabinet member: culture and arts portfolio-holder Peter Kelly.
