President Xi Jinping has instructed the Chinese Communist Party to turn China's military into a “great wall of steel” as a pledge to 'realise' reunification with Taiwan.
President Xi spoke to the National People’s Congress on Monday, after the Chinese Communist Party rubber-stamped his third term as President last week – confirming his place as the most powerful Chinese president since Mao Zedong.
“National reunification is the shared aspiration of the sons and daughters of the Chinese nation and the essence of national rejuvenation,” President Xi said. Although he called for the “peaceful development of cross-trade relations,” President Xi was clear that reunification was the goal.“We should radically oppose the interference of external forces and the successionist activities of Taiwan independence.”
“We should better coordinate development and security. Security is the foundation of development, and stability is the precondition for prosperity,” he said.
