Following a tradition started by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, this year's inauguration will feature a private service at St. John's Episcopal Church, known as the Church of the Presidents. The service aims to return to its original, simpler form, reminiscent of FDR's initial request for a private gathering with family and friends.
This is a tradition many presidents have taken part in, including former President Barack Obama and President George W. Bush. St. John's Episcopal Church is often known as the Church of the Presidents. Every president since President James Madison has attended service there. The tradition of starting inauguration with a private service started with President Franklin D. Roosevelt. He asked the rector at the time to host his family and friends in a private service, and the church agreed.
Roosevelt had such a great experience that he asked for a service to be held on each first anniversary of his inauguration. Sometimes these services are held elsewhere because of the incoming president's denomination. Over the years, the private service has gotten bigger, but this year the Rector decided to return to its original, simpler nature. There will be a lot of similarities to the private service held for FDR, including Roosevelt's prayer, specifically written by the Rector at the time. First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt loved it so much, she took it on as a nightly prayer for the rest of her life
