President Cyril Ramaphosa tests positive for Covid-19
This is the first time since the Covid-19 outbreak in South Africa in March last year that Ramaphosa has tested positive, although several Cabinet ministers have reported positive in the last year.
On Sunday, Ramaphosa addressed the memorial service for the last apartheid president FW De Klerk and, according to the presidency, started feeling unwell after the address in Cape Town.The president, who is fully vaccinated, is in self-isolation in Cape Town and has delegated all responsibilities to Deputy President David Mabuza for the next week.
Ramaphosa returned on Wednesday from a West African tour that included visiting Ghana, Nigeria, Ivory Coast and Senegal. He tested negative for all Covid-19 tests during that time and even on his return. Ramaphosa said his own infection serves as a caution to all people in the country to be vaccinated and remain vigilant against exposure.“Vaccination remains the best protection against severe illness and hospitalisation,” said Ramaphosa in the statement.
The Presidency said the president is in ‘good spirits’ but is being monitored by the South African Military Health Service of the South African National Defence Force. is receiving treatment for mild COVID-19 symptoms after testing positive for the viral infection today, Sunday, 12 December 2021.
