In just a few hours, President Joe Biden will be visiting the border.
President Joe Biden and former president Donald Trump will both be at the border today to address the ongoing crisis.
"We can maintain order, we can protect public safety, and we can treat people with common dignity and humanity provided that we’re all working together," he said. "That’s what we’ve been able to do in San Antonio because of the support of the Biden administration and the department of homeland security. We need Congress now to start addressing the issue of legislative solutions and providing the funding necessary to do that work.
Arrests for illegal crossings fell by half in January, but there were record highs in December. The numbers of migrants flowing across the U.S-Mexico border have far outpaced the capacity of an immigration system that has not been substantially updated in decades. Trump and Republicans claim Biden is refusing to act, but absent law change from Congress, any major policies are likely to be challenged or held up in court.
