President Joe Biden will bestow the Presidential Medal of Freedom to 19 recipients, including notable figures from politics, sports, entertainment, civil rights, LGBTQ+ advocacy, and science. The White House stated that the honorees have made 'exemplary contributions to the prosperity, values, or security of the United States, world peace, or other significant societal, public or private endeavors.
' Among the recipients is Magic Johnson, a legendary basketball player who retired from the NBA in 1991 after revealing his HIV diagnosis. He is recognized as one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History and was selected for the NBA 75th Anniversary Team. Lionel Messi, widely considered one of the greatest soccer players of all time, is also receiving the award. Messi holds numerous records, including eight Ballon d'Or awards and eight FIFA World Player of the Year titles. He has won 45 team trophies, including four UEFA Champions Leagues, two Copa Americas, and one FIFA World Cup. Messi also actively supports children's healthcare and education programs through his foundation and as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador
