Utah is home to one of the best spots in the West to see birds up close. The Eccles Wildlife Education Center at Farmington Bay provides 18,000 acres of managed wetlands right on the edge of the Great Salt Lake.
Ashley Kijowski, a coordinator for the education center, called it one of the most unique ecosystems in the world. Heavy smoke may be visible coming from the Great Salt Lake area in Davis County, but officials said residents shouldn't worry. The Davis County Sheriff's Office said the Utah Department of Natural Resources and its partner agencies would be conducting prescribed burns along the shoreline.

The Sheriff's Office said the controlled burns help manage invasive vegetation in the area and support healthier wetland habitats. Officials have raised concerns about fire dangers as temperatures heat up for the summer months. Nearly 2 million acres have been burned in over 25,000 fires nationwide, which is above the 10-year average for acres burned to date, according to the National Interagency Fire Center. Utah alone has already seen 143 total fires in 2026, 122 of which were human-caused.
The largest so far was the Goshen Canyon Fire, which quickly spread over 400 acres in late April. The body of a missing 26-year-old was recovered at Grand Canyon National Park earlier this week. Sandarsh Krishna, 26, was first reported missing on April 28.
