'Things went better than expected' at horse track when Hilary hit last weekend
On most days, Pasqual Martinez goes unnoticed while doing his job at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club.
“We started the process of finding safe harbor for every horse on Thursday,” said David Jerkens, Del Mar’s racing secretary. Meanwhile, Martinez’s team dug trenches leading to the drains in the lowest areas and manned the pumps. When first notice of Hilary arrived, Del Mar had the pipes leading from the stable area to the infield lake and auxiliary training track jetted.
At the end of racing last Saturday, Dennis Moore’s track maintenance team spent three hours sealing the track using rollers. “You want get as much water to run off the surface and not penetrate as possible,” said Moore.
