Diligent preparation positioned UIW’s Lindsey Scott Jr. for Walter Payton Award
Incarnate Word quarterback Lindsey Scott Jr,, one of three finalists for the Walter Payton Award, passed for 4,686 yards with an FCS record 60 touchdowns while adding 712 rushing yards and 11 scores on the ground. His 71 combined rushing and passing touchdowns marked a new FCS record, as did his 10.32 yards per pass attempt. With plenty of free time after Incarnate Word’s Thursday walkthroughs, quarterback Lindsey Scott Jr.
“It slows the game down some for you,” Scott said. “You put the hard work in, and everything else will be a little bit easy.” He was named as one of three finalists for the Walter Payton Award alongside Fordham’s Tim DeMorat and Monmouth’s Jaden Shirden, with the winner set to be announced at the FCS Awards Banquet on Saturday in Frisco.
In an up-tempo Cardinals offense that tasks the quarterback with relaying signals to as many as five targets on each play, Kinne said Scott’s intelligence and preparation were vital, creating feelings of looseness and confidence. Lindsey’s brother Logan Scott, who just completed his junior season as a defensive back at Nicholls, shared a room with Lindsey and said he often joined in the late-night study before tapping out around 1 or 2 a.m.
Scott’s appetite for talking and learning about football was insatiable, Brewerton said, and he showed a rare ability to understand what his coaches wanted to relay and what his teammates needed to hear.
