The Cup Series returns to the track after a two-week break for the Olympics. Denny Hamlin is the favorite in Sunday’s Cook Out 400.
DAVID MUNDEE Last season, Goshen players gained confidence through winning during a 9-3 second-round playoff season, said head coach Don Moore, after the Eagles finished 6-4 and 1-9 the two previous years.“Last year, as a coaching staff, we knew we were pretty good, but as far as confidence as a team at that time, they weren’t real sure,” Moore said of his players. “As we got along through the season, they started feeling that confidence and seeing we were a good football team.

Both quarterback Jayden McNabb and running back Szemerick Andrews return. McNabb amassed 1,062 yards rushing with 14 touchdowns last year and Andrews, a three-year starter, earned 731 rushing yards on just 52 carries and 11 TDs in Goshen’s high-octane offense that averaged 39.9 points a game.“He didn’t have a whole lot of carries compared to Jayden and Jamauri, but when he touched it, that is where all his big yards came from,” Moore said. “He had explosive plays.
Up front, Goshen returns four offensive line starters in Nehemiah Bedgood , Jacoby Brunson , George Crawley and Koby Richardson . “He focuses on the small things and for a linebacker that says a lot,” Moore said. “He is also physical. He will go get anybody anytime anywhere. It doesn’t matter to him. The main thing that makes him so good at being a good inside linebacker is he doesn’t overcomplicate what he is being coached.”Tristen Andrews, Richardson and Bedgood return on the defensive front with McLendon, Adams and Jerbauri Williams returning in the secondary as strong safety, free safety and cornerback, respectively.
The kicking game returns Zion Picatoste as a kicker and punter. Cody Boyett returns as the long snapper. McNabb is the holder for the extra point and field goal kicks.“I put pressure on him the other day in practice when we were running the 110s ,” Moore said. “I told him, ‘You have one kick. If you hit it, we will take a 110 off, but if you miss it, we will add a 110.’ He kicked a 40 yarder. Boom. He nailed it.
