Both schools were suspended from any football activity by the association on Saturday, a normal step in a situation where fights stop a game.
David Mundee Pike County football was in suspended mode on Monday afternoon, still awaiting word from the Alabama High School Athletic Association, while Headland had a suspension lifted by the AHSAA following two incidents, including a brawl, in Friday’s game between the two football teams.
Hurt said the school “ceased all operations until we hear from them.” That includes junior varsity and junior high programs and any weight lifting and conditioning with players. Pike County’s Hurt expected some Bulldog players to be suspended for coming off the bench to participate in the melee. A national high school rule mandates suspension of 20 percent of athletic contests for leaving the bench area in such situation, which is a two-game suspension in football. The suspensions of multiple players can be staggered over several games.
Both teams sent their players to the locker room after the brawl was cleared and officials ran the final 3:31 of the second quarter off the clock with neither team on the field to reach halftime. It was at time point that administrators of both schools agreed to halt the game for safety reasons, especially since it was a non-region game.
“It will be a learning experience and there will be consequences for the actions that were made,” Hurt said. “There will be consequences from the association as well as from the school board and school system. Football is an extension of the class room. Alvin Henderson, Elba: Henderson rushed for 288 yards rushing and three scores on 16 carries, including a 96-yard run, returned a kickoff 62 yards for a touchdown and threw a 27-yard touchdown pass in the Tigers’ 57-20 win over Providence Christian.
Mason Stuart, Zion Chapel: Stuart accounted for five touchdowns and 232 yards in the Rebels’ 39-6 win over Pleasant Home. Stuart rushed for four touchdowns and 137 yards on just nine carries and passed for 95 yards and one TD on 8-of-11 passing. He was also 3-of-5 on extra-point kicks.
