With the English top flight on ice since mid-March due to the coronavirus, it had been reported that as many as nine clubs were keen to complete the campaign by the end of June. Britain is on lockdown until May 7 at the earliest to limit the spread of Covid-19, leaving English football to play a waiting game.
Premier League clubs are concerned by the legal implications of the campaign running past June 30, which is when standard player contracts expire. Liverpool, Tottenham and Bournemouth have since reversed their decisions to use the government's furlough scheme.
