A man from Melfort charged with second-degree murder in the death of an 11-month old child is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing in December to determine if he will face trial. Upon arrival, officers found paramedics attending to the “unresponsive” infant, according to a news release. Police said the child was taken to hospital and died from injuries on Dec. 28. RCMP said the victim and accused were known to each other.
Investigation found the child’s injuries were “suspicious in nature,” which led to the involvement of the RCMP homicide investigation unit and Prince Albert’s serious crimes unit. A preliminary hearing takes place before a judge in provincial court to determine if the Crown has sufficient evidence to take a matter to trial. Evidence presented at a preliminary hearing is subject to a standard publication ban to preserve trial fairness.
