🫄 A recent study found reluctance among healthcare professionals to prescribe and dispense some medicines to women who are pregnant, which can put their health and lives at risk pauldinsdale3 reports
Many women reported pharmacists refusing to fulfil prescriptions obtained from their GP, while others spoke of being made to feel “guilty” for seeking medication to treat serious conditions. In some cases, due to fears about foetal harm, several participants stopped taking advised treatments without medical consultation, resulting in admissions to hospital or worsening of symptoms.
“Most other medications are safe and widely used during pregnancy, and there are several national prescribing guidelines for treatment during pregnancy. In the case of severe sickness during pregnancy [as in Olivia’s case], there is very good evidence that medicines can be safely prescribed for the mother-to-be.
One woman interviewed in the study described her distress when a pharmacist refused to fill a prescription forprescribed by her GP. “They just wouldn’t give me my prescription, and people were behind me in the queue and could hear what tablets I was on, and that I was pregnant. I wasn’t 12 weeks gone by then, so I hadn’t told anybody. I had to just sit there waiting for them to decide whether I could have it or not and then they said, ‘No, you can’t have it.
