An Alabama lawmaker has prefiled a bill that would make it easier for parents or guardians to make their kids religiously exempt from vaccinations.

) - An Alabama lawmaker has prefiled a bill that would make it easier for parents to make their kids religiously exempt from vaccinations.Currently, parents or guardians need to fill out a form from the state’s Department of Public Health for a religious exemption.

“If you were to talk to John Hancock or Sam Adams, they would be in favor of this bill. You know, guys who literally sacrificed everything for liberty,” said Rep. Butler. The bill would allow parents or guardians to provide a written statement to the local board of education without providing a reason for the exemption. The bill also says they would not need approval to get the religious exemption. The Alabama Department of Public Health told WSFA they do not comment on actively developing legislation, but they do still encourage parents to vaccinate their kids. “Everyone should consider vaccination as a part of their staying healthy strategy,” said Dr. Wes Stubblefield, district medical officer with ADPH. Dr. Stubblefield said he recommends anyone with questions about vaccines to go to a medical professional. “ can help you sort through the amount of information that’s out there on the internet about what information can be trusted and what information is less trustworthy,” he said. Rep. Butler filed the bill in the 2025 legislative session, but it did not make it before a committee before the session wrapped up in May.
