Time is ticking away before the USMNT's trek into the desert ⏳ PaulTenorio and samstejskal predict the roster that Gregg Berhalter will take into Qatar ahead of Wednesday's announcement.
Jesus Ferreira, Jordan Pefok, Josh SargentThe plan going into this piece was for each of us to pick his own squad for September. There weren’t any disagreements, however, until we got to this group.
“When you see Haji scoring two goals, Jordan, his team doing really well, he had an assist again this weekend, he scored two goals already, Josh Sargent scored three in two games, Jesus is having a great year and got on the field and started last game, we’d like to have him score a little bit more, but it’s a good problem to have,” Berhalter said in the interview. “For us, it’s about the profile.
Where we differed, however, is what Berhalter is going to do with his third striker spot, one we both think will be used on a bigger forward who can serve as more of a target and box striker. Vazquez has enjoyed a breakout season in MLS, recording 16 goals and five assists in 29 appearances for. The 6-foot-2 striker can hold the ball up nicely, is a strong physical presence on set pieces and has excellent movement in the penalty box. However, he hasn’t ever been called up by Berhalter. That could lower his chances of making this roster. Conversely, it could serve as a motivator for Berhalter to call him up so he can get a proper look at the 23-year-old.
