It was the first time that U.S. soldiers fired Precision Strike Missiles (PrSMs) from a HIMARS and both pods of the Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) M270A2.
A series of soldier-led flight tests of Precision Strike Missile s was recently completed at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico. It was the first time that U.S. soldiers fired PrSMs from a HIMARS and both pods of the Multiple Launch Rocket System M270A2.
The successful tests enable a more lethal force by providing soldiers with cutting-edge, long-range target neutralization capabilities on proven platforms.Next generation family of precision-strikeDeveloped by Lockheed Martin, the Precision Strike Missile is the next generation family of precision-strike, surface-to-surface weapon systems that support deterrence and deliver enhanced capabilities for neutralizing, suppressing, and destroying targets at depth.PrSM offers artillery units a new long-range capability supporting brigade, division, corps, Army, theater, Joint and Coalition forces.“This milestone validates the soldier’s ability to fire PrSM from all platforms in the U.S. Army inventory and certifies mission readiness,” said Carolyn Orzechowski, vice president of Precision Fires Launchers and Missiles at Lockheed Martin. “Lockheed Martin is committed to pushing the boundaries of innovation to deliver the most advanced 21st Century Security solutions to the warfighter – leveraging digital technologies to streamline development, testing and fielding.”Tests demonstrated extended range against targetsThe tests demonstrated extended range against targets and compatibility with both Lockheed Martin-built launcher platforms. PrSM met success criteria for lethality, range and accuracy from launch to impact, supporting the Army’s efforts to defend our homeland and deter adversaries, according to a press release. The progress of the PrSM program is a testament to the successful collaboration and innovative development approach between Lockheed Martin and the U.S. Army, which prioritizes speed, agility, and close partnership, as per the release.PrSM system offers artillery units a new long-range capability supporting brigade, division, corps, Army, theater, Joint and Coalition forces. Designed to achieve the Army’s 400+ requirement, Lockheed Martin has built PrSM with open architecture to ensure capability can easily be spiraled to achieve longer ranges. The company has revealed that the weapon contains an insensitive munition propulsion system and IM energetic payload capable of defeating the PrSM target set. PrSM also features an open systems architecture design for maximum affordability and flexibility, is modular for future growth, and HIMARS and M270 compatible.Lockheed has revealed that the weapon offers long-range precision strike capability that neutralizes targets out to more than 400 kilometers. The missile is designed with an open systems architecture, providing maximum affordability and flexibility. PrSM features a modular design that allows for future growth and upgrades.
