Despite winning the Kentucky Derby by the closest of margins, Mystik Dan likely will not be the post-time favorite for this Saturday’s Preakness Stakes in
Brian Hernandez Jr. rides Mystik Dan across the finish line to win the 150th running of the Kentucky Derby horse race at Churchill Downs Saturday, May 4, 2024, in Louisville, Ky. Favoritism will likely go to Muth, the Arkansas Derby winner trained by Bob Baffert who did not make the Kentucky Derby field thanks to Churchill Downs’ continued ban against the two-time Triple Crown-winning trainer. Legal challenges by Muth’s owner to have the courts overturn the ban proved futile.
Last year’s Preakness stakes saw just one Kentucky Derby runner, the winner Mage, make the two-week turnaround to the Preakness, where he finished fourth. In this year’s running, Mystik Dan will be joined in the field by two other Kentucky Derby runners In the Arkansas Derby, Muth stalked the pace for most of the race before accelerating on the far turn and then pulling clear in the stretch. He looked like a genuine Kentucky Derby contender in that effort, but with Baffert still banned at Churchill Downs, that question will never be answered.
On paper, this bodes well for Mystik Dan — as he demonstrated in the Kentucky Derby. Though he’ll break further outside in the Preakness, Hernandez Jr. ought to be able to guide him close enough to the rail to get a ground-saving trip.
