Newly inaugurated Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy expressed his condolences and offered prayers for those affected by the collision between a plane and an Army helicopter. Speaking at a press conference following Wednesday's American Airlines crash in Washington D.C., Duffy emphasized that he had only been in office for a little over a day. He acknowledged the gravity of the situation and the impact it had on both the local community and those in Kansas.

The incident occurred Wednesday evening when an American Airlines CRJ 700 flight from Wichita, Kansas, approaching Ronald Reagan National Airport (DCA), collided with an Army Black Hawk helicopter on a training mission. Both aircraft crashed into the Potomac River. According to American Airlines, there were 60 passengers and four crew members on the flight, while the Associated Press reported that the helicopter had three personnel onboard. DE Fire and EMS Chief John Donnelly stated at a press conference on Thursday morning that authorities believe there are no survivors, with 28 bodies recovered so far.Duffy, a former Congressman and reality TV personality, was sworn in as Transportation Secretary on Tuesday. President Trump faced criticism for selecting a 'made-for-TV cabinet' but insisted Duffy would 'prioritize excellence, competence, competitiveness and beauty.' At a press conference shortly after the crash, Duffy said his focus was on those impacted by the flight and that he had spoken with the situation room where the president was located. He noted that both the local and federal teams had performed well in the crisis and that the president was deeply concerned about the event. He also mentioned that authorities had located the two aircraft, with the American Airlines flight's fuselage found inverted in three separate sections. The FAA, Department of Transportation, and White House are working with local and state partners, emphasizing that both aircraft were flying in a 'standard pattern' when the accident occurred
