As Thornton High School District 205 Superintendent Nathaniel Cunningham Jr. reflected Monday on the legacy of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., he kept coming back to one thing: the work. “He did the work.”
The Bourné family sings Monday during a Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration organized by Thornton High School District 205 and South Suburban College.
Patrice and Arthur Burton perform spoken word and drums, featuring a poem about Martin Luther King Jr., as well as poems by Langston Hughes and Sonia Sanchez.“Dr. King is gone,” Cunningham said. “He’s been gone for a long time. But his work continues. His work should continue through us.” Deborah Kimball Crosslin introduced various speakers and performers during Monday’s Southland Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration.
“Having this program at South Suburban is perfect,” Wells said. “Dr. King talked much about education. One quote from Dr. King was, ‘intelligence plus character — that is the true measure of education.’ That’s what we do here at South Suburban College.” Stokes highlighted some quotes from King, emphasizing his call “to live together as brothers or perish together as fools.” She highlighted the college’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion across the institution, activities and events, as well as strategies to promote healing and candid discussions about racism, biases, inequity and injustices in society.
“I believe the best way to carry out Dr. King’s work is to reach out to someone in need and to make an ongoing commitment to community service,” Omosigho said. “I encourage you to make certain that the nation’s Dr. Martin Luther King’s observance is simply not a day off but a day on. Together, we can ensure it is a day of national service.”
