A 7.3-magnitude earthquake struck the Pacific island of Vanuatu on Tuesday, causing significant damage in the capital Port Vila. The quake, which hit at a depth of 57 kilometers, some 30 kilometers off the coast of Efate, Vanuatu 's main island, was followed by a 5.5-magnitude aftershock and several smaller tremors. The ground floor of a four-story concrete building in Port Vila used by foreign embassies, including the US, French, and British missions, was flattened.
A resident reported seeing bodies in the city and a landslide covering a bus. The earthquake also knocked down at least two bridges and toppled other buildings. The US Embassy in Papua New Guinea confirmed all US personnel were safe and accounted for after evacuating the building. The US Embassy has been closed until further notice. New Zealand's High Commission, which shares the building with the US, French, British, and Australian missions, also sustained significant damage
