The winner of a Powerball or Mega Millions jackpot can remain anonymous only if they played the lottery in one of 17 states that allow it.

While Monday's drawing was initially set to be a $975 million prize, hours before the drawing it climbed even higher.No one has won Powerball's jackpot since New Year's Day, a stretch of 38 consecutive drawings without anyone matching the game's six numbers. If no one wins the jackpot Monday or Wednesday night, the game will match its record number of 41 consecutive drawings on Saturday night.

While Monday's drawing was initially set to be a $975 million prize, hours before the drawing it was upped to $1 billion. If a winner matches all five numbers and the Powerball, they have the option to take the full jackpot paid out over 30 years, or a smaller cash payout. Winners almost always take the cash option, which for Monday's drawing is $483.8 million.

Powerball is now the second lottery game to offer a $1 billion jackpot in the past seven days. Last Tuesday, the Mega Millions jackpot rose to an estimated $1.13 billionThe Powerball drawing takes place live at 10:59 p.m. Eastern every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday.
