As of Tuesday morning, only approximately 13% of Puerto Rico's 1.3 million utility customers had power restored. Luma Energy , responsible for power distribution, reported restoring service to 44,700 customers by 1 p.m., but a full recovery was anticipated to take 24-48 hours, contingent upon weather conditions. An underground line fault was identified as the cause of the outage.
The power disruption hindered New Year's celebrations, prompting officials to call for expedited restoration efforts. Puerto Rico has grappled with persistent power problems since Hurricane Maria in 2017, leaving many residents dissatisfied with the grid's dependability. Governor Pedro Pierluisi demanded swift action and transparency from power companies. Although essential facilities like the San Juan Medical Center remained functional using backup generators, the blackout underscored Puerto Rico's vulnerability to power failures during critical events.
