The rich have survival tools for the foreseeable future, but the less fortunate have only the government on which to rely. And the government itself needs a shoulder to cry on as resources are depleted, writes Modidima Mannya.

The Covid-19 coronavirus has had a devastating effect on our lives and will continue to have for the foreseeable future. It has introduced what we now call the new normal, a complexity that affects everyone.

The reality of our two nations is upon us and is more pronounced than before. The spirit of 1994 is required for a different purpose. We might even be forced to consider redrafting our Constitution to address the anomalies created by this new normal. The new normal requires, first, that we develop the correct attitude to appreciate the reality of the drastic changes Covid-19 has introduced to our lives and the world in which we live.

The new normal is not just about our social behaviour. It is not simply about social distancing and staying indoors or receiving food parcels. With an obliterated economy, it is clear that the meaning of a job and work will have to change fundamentally. Looking for a job and working will have a new meaning in our new normal. We have lost thousands of jobs and the future looks even more bleak. Small businesses have perished and more will, too.

We will need a new normal political system and establishment which appreciates that power must truly be vested in the people and that it is the people who must, in true form, govern. We must reject those who have all along put profit above public interest and were the first to lend us money earned from the exploitation of our natural resources and labour.
