Parents of synagogue shooting suspect call him ‘evil’

POWAY, California—The parents of John Earnest, who allegedly opened fire on a synagogue Saturday, called their son evil on Monday.

On Saturday morning, Earnest entered Chabad of Poway with an assault-style rifle and allegedly opened fire, killing one woman and wounding three others, including a rabbi. “Our son’s actions were informed by people we do not know, and ideas we do not hold. Like our other five children, he was raised in a family, faith, and a community that all rejected hate and taught that love must be the motive in everything we do,” his parents said.
