Luann Preston of Poway is elated she took her son, Nick, to CPR classes when he was in high school.
Little did she know that the classes would later help save the life of Mia, her 2-year-old granddaughter.
Nick Preston found his daughter unresponsive in the pool. Relying on his memory from high school more than 20 years ago, he sprang into action, performing CPR as the authorities were alerted. Firefighters, sheriff’s deputies, a chaplain and a dispatcher were all honored on Tuesday for their work helping a drowning toddler last month.
During the call, the dispatcher was able to keep Nick Preston calm and focused while medics were responding, officials said.“Little Mia was handed to me,” Marshall recalled Tuesday. “I initiated CPR.”“She had no signs of life,” said Marshall, who added that his department responds to about three to four drownings and near drownings each year.Meanwhile, Luann Preston got the call telling her what had happened to her granddaughter. She and her daughter-in-law happened to be close to the hospital.
