Poway brush fire prompts evacuations of nearby businesses [Breaking]
A 4-acre brush fire in Poway prompted brief evacuations of businesses Sunday afternoon before firefighters halted the spread with the help of two water-dropping helicopters, authorities said.
The fire began around 1:35 p.m. near a hiking trail in the area of Metate Lane and Community Road. Sheriff’s deputies closed roads on Metate Lane from Community Road to Rio Real, as well as on Community Road from Civic Center Drive to Stowe Drive. No structures were threatened, although authorities evacuated some businesses on Brookprinter Place. At least about 200 people had to leave an event at one business, sheriff’s Lt. Ryan Wisniewski said.
Poway fire Battalion Chief Jesus Martinez told OnScene TV the fire spread east at a “moderate” rate. Two helicopters were called in to assist crews on the ground, Martinez said. Firefighters stopped the spread about an hour after the fire started. Community Road reopened to northbound traffic around 3:30 p.m. Other roads remained close into the late afternoon.No injuries were reported, Martinez said. The cause of the fire was under investigation.This story was updated with additional information.
