Meteorologists warn of extreme cold and the possibility of snow in the upcoming week. Forecast details include a mix of rain and wind, with the chance of a rare snow event on Tuesday and Tuesday night.
We are closely monitoring the possibility of cold air impacting the forecast area next week. It appears we might encounter extreme cold with temperatures dropping to the low 20s and wind chills as low as 10 degrees at times. There's also a chance of wintry weather, with both the GFS and European models indicating potential precipitation.Let's start with the short-term forecast. We're in for a pleasant day today! Temperatures will begin in the 30s with some patchy morning frost.
By the afternoon, expect temperatures to reach the mid-60s. A few clouds will increase in the afternoon. Rain arrives on Friday night and intensifies into Saturday morning. High-resolution modeling suggests showers and thunderstorms persisting into the afternoon. While the rain could be heavy at times, severe weather is not anticipated. The colder air arrives beginning Sunday. Sunday afternoon will be windy as the front moves offshore, with wind gusts potentially reaching 30 mph. High temperatures will be suppressed, only reaching the upper 40s. The most intriguing period is Monday night and Tuesday. There's a possibility for an area of low pressure to develop off the coast of Texas and then slide eastward. The ideal conditions for winter precipitation in our region occur when we have a cold air mass and a Gulf low. It seems both these scenarios could align. The last time this happened, we experienced cold rain, while our northern neighbors received snow in places like Tuscaloosa and Birmingham last week. This time, the low appears to be positioned further south. The cold air mass could also be more extensive, potentially leading to a rare event. The European model and the GFS both now suggest the potential for mainly snow precipitation on Tuesday and Tuesday night. It's far too early to discuss specific accumulations. Remember, this is five days out, so changes are possible.
