Sorry, but sneaking a couple of french fries in your salad might not count towards your necessary daily intake of vegetables. That's because potatoes may soon no longer be considered a vegetable, according to new dietary guidelines for 2025 from the U.S. Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee — made up of USDA and the Department of Health and Human Services representatives.
The Wall Street Journal reported that with the increasing addition of trendy diets and new "eating patterns," "the panel wants to make sure everyone is getting enough nutrients, whether eating more potatoes, bread, or beans," the Journal explains. The National Potato Council and The Grain Chain have both openly opposed potatoes not being labeled a vegetable. Speaking during testimony on Sept. 12, 2023, during a hearing about the Dietary Guidelines for 2025, Kam Quarles, the CEO of the National Potato Council drew a line in the soil.
